1. Monterey: A lot of weapons with speed on offense, playmakers on defense.
2. Palma: I guess Palma took it personally that it was ranked No. 3.
3. San Benito: Impressive season opening win over a Hilmar team that was 13-1 last fall.
4. Alvarez: Dating back to last year, the Eagles have won 11 straight regular season games.
5. Carmel: Held scoreless in the second half last week for the first time in 80 games.
6. Christopher: Defense provided the Cougars with their first win last week.
7. Salinas: No time to dwell on a heartbreaking loss to Division III champion Aptos.
8. Pacific Grove: Looked a lot like the same Breakers from last fall.
9. Monte Vista: Don't sleep on the Mustangs, whose defense created six turnovers last week.
10. North Salinas: Strong showing in their season opening win over Alisal.
On the bubble: Soledad, King City, Seaside, Gilroy.

Granted Monterey has a lot coming back and talent, but not sure how good they will be given their nonleague schedule until maybe the 4th week against Menlo-Atherton which is probably going to be 0-3 or 1-2 by the time they face Monterey. Palma's progress from last season will be seen this coming week against a Saint Francis defense that may be the best in the WCAL). If Palma defense holds up and offense does reasonable, Monterey is going to have a tough shot at defeating Palma this year. Palma should go 3-1 in nonleague. San Benito plays a tough non-league as well. Depending on how they do against Los Gatos who defeated Mitty will be a good indicator of how good they are. Salinas surprised this weekend, but would be surprised if they can hang with Palma or San Benito and will be tested with Carmel who think will win. If Monterey's defense is better, then think they are better than Salinas-but tough to tell based on their schedule. The Cowboys have a tough schedule (and Carmel game will be interesting) so they will be battle hardened by league. Still think Palma or Monterey should be number one. I think Palma will defeat Monterey this year. Their depth will be a problem for Monterey that has too many two way starters, especially on line.
