Al Avila isn't trying to rekindle the past.
Moving linebacker Troy Loper to quarterback was out of necessity.
Than again, Avila said the same thing in 2006 when he inserted current Tampa Bay linebacker Mason Foster behind center on offense.
That move took the Spartans to the programs first Central Coast Section football title.
What Avila is trying to create today in cohesiveness and stability with his offense.
Seaside is a young team that's learning on the fly. Loper has never played the position at any level. Yet, it took just two starts for him to rush for over 100 yards in a game.
Growing pains can be expected this fall for Seaside, who has made the playoffs nine out of the last 10 years.
But the growth from the season opener to last week's loss to Aptos has Avila believing the team is going in the right direction.
"We will be a different looking team later in the season,'' Avila promised.
