Mystery solved.
We know who is going to carry the ball for Palma this fall.
Maybe the Chieftains knew as well and were just hiding Emilio Martinez.
Or maybe Martinez forced Palma coach Jeff Carnazzo's hand.
The sophomore had a burst of speed we haven't seen in Palma's backfield since 2008, rushing for 163 yards in the Chieftains 30-7 win over Carmel.
Durability didn't seem to be an issue for the elusive 5-foot-8 Martinez, who had 26 carries, scoring all three of Palma's touchdowns.
Martinez credited Palma's offensive line. And he should. But he turned small seams into huge gains in critical moments to keep drives alive.
If Palma gets a lead in games, that defense is going to shut down a lot of teams.

Emilio shattered Palma's frosh rushing and TD records. Palma also had another soph starting at FB when they had two RBs. 3 sophs started for the Chieftains - RB, LB and Center. Palma defensive backfield looks really good this year and line was missing one starter who should be back in a few games, the other is out for the year with the sole returning lineman anchoring the line. On a note about Carmel, that RB is a load. He is going to be great in a couple years. Carmel o-line looked pretty good early on, but seemed to wear down on both sides. Still think Carmel will run the table in the MTAL.Their offense will hit a stride at some point. The Monterey game will be interesting.
