Stevenson (6-3, 4-3)
No team is more handicapped than Stevenson, which does not officially start school until most teams have already had at least one scrimmage or taken part in a jamboree.
As a result, the Pirates will maintain a nine-game schedule instead of 10, opening their season on Sept. 20, after most schools have played two games.
"We miss the early-season competition,'' Stevenson coach Bruce Dini said. "Because of our late start, it (nine games) suits us pretty well. For us to get to the postseason, we'd have to win our league.''
Stevenson has some holes to fill, namely its starting quarterback, leading rusher and leading receiver from last year.
Read Reynolds is expected to run the offense behind center. Defense could be the Pirates' strength with the return of linebacker Jack Bournes, who led the team in tackles last year.
The numbers are up at Stevenson this fall. But it's a young group that will learn on the job. Over the last two years, the Pirates have posted back-to-back six win seasons.
"I think it's a testament to how hard we work,'' Stevenson caption and safety Kendrick Pearson said. "Because of the late start, we really have to put in the extra work.''
