King City (6-4, 5-2)
 It has been 20 years since the Mustangs gathered a share of the Mission Trail Athletic League title. Two decades since capturing a Central Coast Section title.
 King City was one play away from going to the playoffs last year. Instead, it has the second longest playoff drought in the county, having gone seven years.
 There are no excuses this year for the Mustangs to not make a playoff push, having closed last year by winning five of their final six games -- the one loss being by a point in the final seconds.
 "Sure it serves as incentive,'' senior receiver Dominic Rose said. "It's been my drive and fuel since the end of last year.''
 The core is back with the return of quarterback Chase Barbree and the 6-foot-4 Rose, who scored highly in several offseason combine workouts.
  King City also discovered a ground game last year with Wacey Barrington rushing for nearly 800 yards and eight touchdowns as a sophomore
 Is it enough to unseat six-time MTAL champion Carmel?
 That may hedge on the defense, which allowed just 40 points in five league wins, but 85 in its two MTAL losses.
 All-league defensive lineman Isaac Perez is back along with linebacker Michael Krehbiel, who had 105 tackles last fall.
