The one thing Steven Zenk took pride in as the North Salinas head football coach was improving his kids in the classroom.
In his nine years at North Salinas, the football team's overall grade point average improved in each year. Last year not one varsity player was ineligible.
While there were some lean years on the field during Zenk's tenure at North Salinas, there was some good ones as well.
A share of the Tri-County Athletic League title in 2008, a trip to the 2007 CCS Division I semifinals, falling to eventual champion Palo Alto.
And a return to the playoffs this past fall, posting a 7-4 record, the third straight year North Salinas improved in the win column.
Those will be big shoes to fill.
