MTAL softball

A week off from league play means four teams remained tied for first at 3-1.
Not a part of that list is reigning three-time Mission Trail Athletic League champion Santa Catalina, who sits a game out with two losses.
While I wouldn't write off the Cougars bid for a four-peat, the program is still smarting from the loss  of Inez Borromeo and Vanessa Furman, both of which suffered concussions on a collision on March 25.
Neither has been able to practice, according to head coach Jim Pingree, whose Cougars host Pacific Grove on Tuesday.
As talented as Santa Catalina is, it does not have a deep roster.
And this might be the most balanced the MTAL has been in over a decade.
Carmel, Stevenson, Pacific Grove and Gonzales all sit in a tie for first.
The resurgent Spartans, who have had one winning season in 15 years, have beaten both Carmel and Santa Catalina.
The Padres knocked Stevenson from the unbeaten ranks while Pacific Grove has won three straight since falling to Carmel in its season opener.
