Gonzales softball

There was little reason to believe that the Spartans would be contenders in the Mission Trail Athletic League this spring.
It wasn't just a winless preseason that left doubts, as much as it was the lopsided scores. Gonzales was outscored 37-3 in its first three games.
Yet, it's almost as if the Spartans have been transformed in league play.
 Who are these girls?
 Good question.
Right now it's a cast of unknowns that have jumped out to a 2-0 start in the MTAL, having shutout Soledad and erupted for 12 runs in a win over perennial playoff contender Carmel.
The 12 runs was more than Gonzales had scored in its first five games combined.
What we do know about the Spartans is pitcher Natalie Basaldua has a shutout to her credit, striking out seven in seven innings against Soledad.
We also know Basaldua can hit, driving in three runs in one game.
Of course, the road gets a little harder with Santa Catalina and Pacific Grove on the horizon. But only two teams are unbeaten in the MTAL and Gonzales is one of them.
