It would have been easy for Seaside to fold up its tent after Ronnie Turner -- arguably the best player in the county -- was knocked unconscious after making a tackle, and was taken to the hospital in the first quarter.
The wind had been taken out of Seaside's sails. The adrenaline rush vanished.
Yet, the Spartans responded, refusing to let Monterey run all over them in a 19-7 setback.
This was a defensive minded battle that featured more than one rock jarring hit.
Yet, in the end, turnovers -- four -- crushed Seaside.
Then again Monterey has been an opportunist defense during its five game winning streak, forcing 22 turnovers.
A different player seems to step up each game. This time it was Travis Woods, who picked off two passes inside the 10-yard line to halt two potential scoring drives.
If Woods doesn't make those plays, the result of the game might have been different.
