Ranked No. 7 in the state in the Junior College preseason rankings, American River erupted for 59 points in a season opening win over the Lobos last year.
The Valley Conference champions went on two four-game winning streaks, with two of their three loses coming from national power City College of San Francisco.
Two freshmen quarterbacks threw for nearly 2,700 yards and 23 touchdowns last year for American River. Its top three receivers from last fall are also back.
MPC opened the preseason rankings at No. 20 in Northern California. Tailback Don Carter showed glimpses of the future last fall with five touchdown runs in limited duty.
David Donahue and James Karasek anchor a defense that got better with age last year. MPC gave up 195 points in its first five games -- 51 points in its final five regular season games.
