Waiting for the green light

This has to be the strangest week of the school year if you're a high school athlete playing a fall sport.
All summer you've trained with your teammates, attended camps and strengthened yourself for this year.
Yet, all you can do until Friday is sit and wait for the green light.
Meaning there's no practice when school gets out in the afternoon over the next four days. No coaching.
The Central Coast Section will not allow any team activity until Aug. 16.
It's called a shut down period.
But it doesn't make much sense, since teams have virtually been together all summer.
In the meantime, fields, gyms and pools are silent for four more days.
