One football coach has told me that St. Francis Catholic has informed Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League rivals Aptos, Scotts Valley and Soquel that it plans to forfeit its varsity games this year because of dwindling numbers.
Yet, St. Francis is expected to play all of its non-league schedule, which includes dates with King City, Greenfield and Stevenson.
Isn't your obligation to your league first?
St. Francis was 2-8 last season, 1-5 in the SCCAL. It was outscored 151-22 by Aptos, Scotts Valley and Soquel, who all made the playoffs.
Will the SCCAL step in and void this? It's setting a bad precedent for other schools that may struggle to follow suit.
St. Francis made the playoffs in 2009.
