He didn't take the conventional path to the NFL.
Kassim Osgood wasn't drafted after catching over 100 passes in his only season at San Diego State.
Yet, 11 years later the North Salinas High graduate is still in the NFL, still regarded as one of the premier special team players in the league.
Osgood, who signed with the 49ers Tuesday, has always believed he was an NFL receiver.
His 17 yard average on 44 career catches backs that.
But he also understood the importance of his role as a special teams demon, having earned two Pro Bowl appearances with the Chargers.
When you think of the 49ers Super Bowl loss last season, the first thing that comes to mind is a 108 yard kickoff return by Baltimore to open the second half.
All that is missing from the 32-year-old's career is a ring.
