Last year Jayla Scholis peaked at the proper time, setting a Seaside school record in the 100 meters at the CIF state track and field prelims, reaching the finals in 11.92.
Scholis will need to duplicate the feat tonight and then some to extend her season. The ninth fastest time entered is 11.76. Then again, the senior has not been pushed this year, clocking 12.05.
If Scholis gets a better lane for the 200 tonight in Clovis, her school record time of 24.47 in the 200 will drop. The top nine qualify for Saturday's finals.
What makes Jessica Davis' half second improvement in the 100 hurdles over the last three weeks so impressive is she hasn't been challenged, clocking 14.72 at the section finals.
That will change tonight at the state prelims as the King City senior is ranked 21st. Davis has room to drop more time, perhaps two-tenths. But it might not be enough to extend her season.
Aptos's Nikki Hiltz is ranked No. 1 in the state in the 800 (2:09.50) and No. 2 in the 1,600 behind San Lorenzo Valley's Anna Maxwell, who is among the national leaders at 4:42.47.
One note of interest. North Salinas alum Calvin Harrison still holds the state record in the 400 at 45.25, set in 1993.
