A hidden gem has surfaced for tonight's Central Coast Section track and field finals in Gilroy.
Sophomore James Welsh has thrown his name into the hat in the 1,600 meters.
The Monterey distance ace will go into the finals with a season best of 4:18.84, which has him within a stride of the leaders.
Welsh will likely need another personal best to crack the top three. However, he is within striking distance of the automatic qualifying mark of 4:16.38.
