Top mark: Miguel Vasquez (Andrew Hill) 4:20.12. 8th: James Welsh (Monterey) 4:23.72: Projected finish: 6th: Welsh is capable of dipping under 4:20.00. But so are seven other runners. *Note: Welsh has a best of 4:18.84. The automatic state qualifying mark is 4:16.38.
100
Top mark: Joey Sanfilippo (Bellarmine) 10.83. 8th: Cordell Reed (Seaside) 11.27. Projected finish: 7th. Has dropped nearly a half second since the start of the season.
300 intermediate hurdles
Top mark: Kamara Biawogi (Prospect) 38.50. 6th: Trevor Wason (Salinas) 39.86. Projected finish: 6th. Does the senior have one more personal record in him?
3,200
Top mark: Yohaness Estifanos (Milpitas) 9:18.80: 9th: Ivan Pina (North Salinas) 9:33.45: Projected finish: 5th: Capable of dipping under 9:20.00.
1,600 relay
Top mark: St. Francis (3:24.74). 4th: Salinas (3:26.56). Projected finish: 3rd. The Cowboys have to dip under 3:25.00 to extend their season.
Discus
Top mark: Dustin Samms (Monte Vista Christian) 162-4. 3rd. Mario Gonzales (North Salinas) 157.1. Projected finish: 3rd. Another foot on his throws would solidify a spot in the state meet.
Long jump
Top mark: Matthew Wong (Mitty) 23-5. 8th: Marcus Washington (Palma) 21-8. Projected finish: 4th: The defending champ will have to set a personal record to vault into contention. *Note: Washington has a best of 22-4. The automatic state qualifying mark is 22-8.
High jump
Top mark: Raymond Silver (Watsonville) 6-2. 8th: Chase Pacheco (Palma) 6-0. Projected finish: 6th. The competition stopped at 6-2. I believe 6-4 gets to state. *Note: Silver has a best of 6-6.
Shot put
Top mark: Jonathan Beering (Serra) 58-2. 7th: John Irving (Monterey) 48-2. Projected finish: 4th. Irving is capable of throwing over 50 feet.
