Seaside-Gilroy baseball
Was it a wakeup call for Seaside in falling from the unbeaten ranks 48 hours ago? Or were the Spartans perhaps looking ahead?
Now the Spartans are looking up at the Monterey Bay League Pacific Division standings as they face unbeaten Gilroy today at 4 p.m.
The Mustangs 6-0 league start is not a surprise. I said before the season started their stay in the Pacific Division would be brief.
I'm not sure anyone, though, saw Seaside jumping out to its best league start since 1975. And while the Spartans are still learning the game on the field, they are stealing bases at a record pace.
Both teams have been on power surges in league play with Gilroy producing 72 runs in six games and the Spartans having produced 65 going into today's meeting.
The Spartans could see Gilroy sophomore Justin Hale, who has 21 strikeouts in 13 innings in league, and has not allowed an earned run this year.
Maxx Usrey has been spraying the ball all over the field for the resurgent Spartans, with 12 of his 19 hits going for extra bases. He also has 21 stolen bases.
