Sunil Smith has stepped down as the Alisal football coach after a decade on the East Side campus, to take a job as an assistant coach at Hartnell College.
I don't know if there is a bigger loss for a high school program in the county.
Smith brought respect and pride immediately to a program that hadn't won anything in its previous 38 years.
In his first season, he won the programs first and only Monterey Bay League title.
He guided Alisal to the postseason four times, setting a school record this past season with eight wins.
Smith got more out of his players than any other coach in the county. Don't take my word for it. Just ask his peers.
Yet, Smith, a former Hartnell cornerback, has always had an aspiration to coach in college, recently completing his Masters Degree.
This is a great pickup for Hartnell. But a painful loss for the Trojans family.

Wow that is a huge blow to Alisal. But good for coach smith. Obviously he made the decision for his future and you cant fault him for that. I dont know if coaching at Hartnell as an assistant would be considered a dream job but I imagine that will just be a stepping stone for his coaching career.
