Alvarez (0-7) at Monterey (6-1), Friday at 7:30 p.m.
Maybe that non-league schedule wasn't as soft as some people thought it was for Monterey.
Or perhaps it kept the Toreadores healthy for the start of league play, where they are essentially one bad quarter of football from being undefeated.
Beating San Benito and Salinas in back-to-back weeks has quieted its critics. Monterey has a clear path to the playoffs for the third straight year.
Alvarez is headed towards its 10th straight season of failing to finish with a .500 or better overall record. It still has yet to score a point in the first quarter.
Last year Alvarez beat Monterey 14-7.
