Michael Lopez is the best running back in the Monterey Bay League, maybe in the county.
Last year he was a game changer against Seaside, rushing for 121 yards and two touchdowns, and catching three passes for another 45 yards to set up two touchdowns.
But where Lopez broke the hearts of the Spartans was on defense when he intercepted a pass and returned it 80 yards for a touchdown with 1:31 left, sealing a 47-45 win.
I bring this up because the Spartans throw the ball twice as much as they run it.
You have to account for Lopez on defense. Seaside runs a lot of traffic across the middle. I would not test the two-time All-County standout.
