Football picks

No rhyme or reason, other than it's football season.
Friday's games
Salinas at Atascadero: The Greyhounds were 9-3 last year, beating Salinas 35-7 in the opener. Deionte Barnes rushed for nearly 700 yards in a backup role as a junior for Atascadero. The Cowboys have dropped their last three season openers. Pick: Atascadero.

Alisal at Washington Union (Fresno): The Panthers were 9-2 overall last year, going undefeated in the North Sequoia League. They closed the season with eight straight wins, capturing their section Division IV title. One of their wins was a season opening 27-13 decision at Alisal. The Trojans hope to build off last years finish, when they closed the season by winning three of their final four. Pick: Washington Union.

San Benito at Palo Alto: The Balers open the season against the reigning Division I state champions, who were 14-0 last year and return their top two running backs. Pick: Palo Alto.

Saturday's games
North Salinas at Carmel: Renewing a rivalry after a two year absence, the Vikings have never lost to Carmel, who is 23-2 under third year coach Golden Anderson. The reigning three-time MTAL champion Padres have not lost a home game in two years. Pick: Carmel.

Silver Creek at North County: Two teams that sport the silver and black, the Raiders bounced back from a 51-14 season opening loss last year to North County to finish 6-3. The Condors may be hard-pressed to match last years record breaking start, in which they averaged 48.8 points through their first five games. Pick: North County.

I agree with your picks. Palo Alto has a soph transfer at QB that will be a high D1A recruit (in a couple years) and son of 49ers QB coach - Geep Chryst. The kid is 6-3 or 6-4 already. PA also has two returning RBs that are among the best in CCS. I'm rooting for Holister but I think PA will be very good. Salinas will have to play great defense. If they do, this could be a great game.
