Devin Pearson's selection to the All-State baseball team made the Carmel senior the only athlete in the county last year to earn all-state honors in two sports, achieving the feat as a quarterback in football.
Only two other athletes in the last 25 years have been as dominating in three sports as Pearson, in Todd Whitehurst of North County in 1990 and Ronnie Drummer of North Salinas in 2004.
Whitehurst had a football scholarship to Cal as a quarterback, but choose to sign with the Indians after being drafted out of high school as a third baseman/pitcher.
He and Pearson are the only athletes to earn all-county honors in football, basketball and baseball.
Drummer was an all-state selection in football in 2003 and a second place finisher at the state track finals in the 100 meters (no divisions). He also earned all-league honors in basketball.
One other athlete that put up a memorable season in 2006 was Monterey's Michael Phillips, who earned all-county honors in football and basketball and won CCS titles in the 200 and 400 meters.
