Survival will be the goal on Saturday at the Central Coast Section trials at Gilroy.
A dozen athletes have a shot at extending their seasons, including Monterey's Stephen Dorsey and North County's Keith Rayburn.
Dorsey has the top mark in the CCS in the high jump (6-feet-8) while Rayburn has a CCS leading 15-7 in the pole vault.
Last year at this time, Rayburn's season ended when he failed to clear a height at the MBL finals.
Dorsey will also be a threat in the triple jump (45-2) and long jump (22-3).
Other names to watch include:
Richie Casas, North County: Hasn't had a personal best since March in the shot put when he uncorked it 55-11. Casas tossed the discus a season best 161-7 three weeks ago.
Oscar Peason, Alisal: The senior is ranked third in the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.00) and is among the top six in the triple jump (44-5).
Julian Nagata, Alvarez: Should advance to the finals in the 300 intermediate hurdles (39.53) and is on the bubble in the 110 high hurdles (15.50).
Michael Amiya, Salinas: Needs to approach his season best of 22-1 1/2 in the long jump to extend his season.
Bryan Tena, Salinas: On the cusp in the 1,600.
Rich Standish, North County: If you're looking for a sleeper at the trials, Standish has only run a handful of open 400's this spring.
