Gilroy sports

Wasn't the opening of Christopher High in Gilroy supposed to cripple Gilroy High's sports programs?
Well the girls soccer and basketball teams are unbeaten in the TCAL. The boys soccer team is challenging Alisal for a title. The boys basketball team is playoff bound, having beaten Palma.
And the Mustangs wrestling team is among the best in the CCS.

The impact will really start to show itself next season when this last class moves on.

Let's not forget that Gilroy High still has over 2,000 students - Christopher High "only" has 650.

While the second high school (whether Gilroy/Christopher or Seaside/Marina)will impact the sports programs when you compare the school's sports team's results to the the pre-split days, it is going to take some time.

See what happens to the sports programs when Gilroy High and Christopher (as well as Seaside and Marina) are about the same size. Gilroy and Christopher should both end up with about 1,300 students in a few years. While Seaside and Marina could both have about 800 students each...although it is likely that Seaside will be the bigger school for a longer period than the Gilroy/Christopher situation. (By way of comparison, Monterey has 1,300 students, Scotts Valley has 800 and Carmel has 731.)

Frankly it was surprising that Gilroy had such a down year in football in 2010. With over 2,000 students, Gilroy has more than enough athletes to compete in the TCAL. However should Gilroy end up with about 1,300 students in a few years it will clearly be the smallest public school in the TCAL. (North Salinas is currently the smallest public school in the TCAL with 2,058 students.)

Bottom line, it is going to take several more years for the introduction of the new high school to have a major impact on the field, the court, etc.

And while the impact on the sports programs of the legacy schools may be negative (key word is "may"), we can all hope that the smaller school size will have a very positive impact on the academic situation at all the schools involved.

Having watched the TCAL lower levels and talked with Gilroy fans, many of the young athletes (and critical booster parents with them) transfered out or decided to attend Christopher as freshman/sophs. The Gilroy lower levels are now struggling mightily. You can't just go by pure enrollment size - there are other socio-economic factors involved here that don't affect many of the "bubble" schools you list.

Gilroy girls soccer will continue to do well in TCAL, given the state of girls soccer in Salinas and Monterey. With little or no club options most of the girls are entering high school with very limited soccer skills. I believe only Notre Dame and Catilina have won a ccs game in the past few years. Until this area has a club system girls soccer will continue to struggle.
