Basketball
Statement game: Carmel's defense putting the clamps on reigning four-time MTAL champion Pacific Grove in a 50-28 win.
Most impressive: Salinas improving to 14-1 overall with a 32-point win over Alvarez.
Best game: Monterey Peninsula College holding off Hartnell.
Most disappointing: Stevenson refusing to call in its results because The Herald doesn't run box scores. Coach you're only hurting your kids.

I always thought it was the Herald that was hurting the kids by NOT printing the box scores. Granted the article mentions the high scorer(s) but the box scores give credit for the 2 points that Johnny made or the 4 points that Peter had.
Why not give all the players their due and print the box scores...in basketball and football?
What is the real reason why the local newspaper does not print the local box scores? I'd much rather see the box scores with local kids' names in it than the box score for some NBA team that I could care less about.
It is the newspaper that hurts the kids just so the newspaper can be keeper of the secret stats. And Johnny or Peter who play hard every night never get to see their name in the paper.
I have to agree. I am sure that the Herald is aware of why the community reads the sports page, it's local sports, not national sports. With all the information available to us on the internet, cable and smart phones, who goes to the Herald for an NBA box score??? Most of us are picking up the Sports page to see what our favorite LOCAL high school/college team or our/neighbor's/friend's SON/DAUGHTER did last night, not whether the Denver Nuggets won or lost and how many Carmelo scored!!
Good for the Stevenson Coach for making this an issue, the Herald should be putting in the box scores in the morning paper.
