Hartnell (1-5) at San Jose City College (1-5), 5 p.m.: Much like the 49ers, Hartnell erased an 0-5 start with a win over a rival last week in its Coast Conference opener. Both teams scored 34 points in wins last week. Hartnell all-state linebacker Kiero Small is coming off a 16-tackle effort, which included a sack and fumble recovery. Small is second in the state in tackles with 79. Ricky Rodwell and Alvin Jelks have become a nice combination in the backfield for the Panthers. The Jaguars rushed for nearly 300 yards last week.
Monterey Peninsula (2-4) at Cabrillo (1-5), 7 p.m.: The Jerry Alvarez to Fernando Olivarez connection has resurfaced at Cabrillo. Alvarez has thrown for 834 yards, 404 to his former Watsonville High teammate. The pair have connected for eight touchdowns. Settling on one quarterback last week seemed to provide more continuity in the Lobos' offense and aid the confidence of David Fales, who completed 17-of-23 for 162 yards and no interceptions. Fales hit eight different receivers, including Bret Chernetsky, who is now fifth in the state in catches with 42. Cabrillo fell last week to Hartnell.
