Prep football series XIV

Seaside

Thoughts of playing for a state title are not being hidden in discussion. The reigning Central Coast Section Medium School champion Spartans believe they should have been extended an invitation last year.
Seaside could be even better this year with the return of record setting quarterback Ronald Saxton and single season school rushing record holder Jovahn Lualemana. In addition, two talented linemen transferred in to solidify the trenches.
Defensively, the Spartans suffered some big losses to graduation. And Seaside will suit up just 32 players this year.
But the Spartans biggest obstacle last year was themselves. Complacency often set in. In three postseason games, they had to come from behind to win all three.
No program plays with more intensity or passion. Eventually it takes its toll over a 13-week season. Maintaining it for four months is difficult for any team.
Seaside's non-league schedule includes Salinas, Atascadero and Palma. If it wins two of those games and runs the table with the rest of its schedule, an invitation to the state championship could be on the table.
