Making the jump from eight-man football to 11-man football will include a lot of growing pains this fall.
While the Mariners have 46 players signed up, only six played last year. There is one senior and 16 freshmen that could play varsity this season.
Further complicating matters is Marina didn't have a coach to help with the transition until five weeks ago. Meaning, there is no system in place two weeks before its season opener.
But there is some size and speed, and a lot of heart.
Scheduling a preseason that includes Leigh of San Jose and Santa Clara might have been a bit optimistic after going 5-1-2 last year in eight-man football.
But if Marina can grow with each game, a win or two in its first season in the Mission Trail Athletic League is not unrealistic.
