Who has the more difficult preseason schedule — Palma or Salinas?
The defending Tri-County Athletic League champion Chieftains open the year hosting Central Coast Section Open Division finalist St. Francis, who humbled them in the playoffs.
Palma follows that up with Southern Section power St. Joseph's of Santa Maria and two-time state finalist Cardinal Newman of Santa Rosa, before opening the TCAL season against Salinas.
The Cowboys will host CIF power Atascadero and CCS Division III champion Seaside before embarking on road games with Santa Teresa and Los Gatos.

Probably more aptly described as nonleague schedule or pre-league schedule(rather than preseason). The games do count for playoff seedings and the season starts at game one. Also, if you include Palma's 4th nonleague game, the Chieftains also play Seaside. Palma's schedule is tougher, but Salinas is also strong schedule. Saint Francis and St Josephs will be stronger than Los Gatos and Atascadero this coming season. SF and St Josephs will also play Los Gatos and Atascadero respectively. SF will be a WCAL favorite and should handidly defeat Los Gatos. St Jo's recently was moved to the Pac 7 Southern Section (Atascadero's league) and is the favorite, although Atascadero should be very good. Both play Seaside. Cardinal Newman should be competitive for their league title (better than last season, but not as good as a few years ago).
The Santa Theresa team Salinas plays should be decent, but middle of the pack in the CCS Mt Hamilton Division.
