Football schedules are beginning to trickle in for the fall. I have noticed that at least two teams are playing just nine games this year instead of 10.
Blame part — actually most of it — on the economy and school budgets. Schools simply can not afford to travel to far.
At least one school is asking (not mandatory) for $150 per player to play football this year. Other schools are battling transportation issues.
You could begin to see more schools face teams closer to home in the preseason.
Monterey, for example, has games with Carmel and Pacific Grove this year while Seaside has North Salinas and Palma on its preseason menu for the second straight year.
Not only does it cut transportation costs, it creates more revenue. There is far more interest in local teams facing each other.
