While several high school districts are fighting to keep their sports budgets alive, Salinas High — with the aid of a booster club — will be sending its football teams to Carlsbad near San Diego to play a game in September.
This trip is for all three football programs -- roughly 180 kids and for three days. It probably doesn't happen without the aid of the Salinas booster club and donations. But it's happening.
Meanwhile, Monterey and Seaside don't know if they'll have bus transportation this fall.

Tt's great that Salinas will travel, but they may have bit off more than they can chew playing this upcoming LaCosta Canyon team. While I think Salinas should be competitive for a title or at least #2-3 in the TCAL next season, that LaCosta Canyon team will have some very special athletes (one of the top in the state), lots of speed and they play in one of the toughest leagues in the state. It may be another Hug like game like last year. The other team will probably be favored by 21+ in the varsity game. I will be rooting for the Cowboys, but they should play some teams in the NCS or San Joaquin section that are more their level. San Diego will be a great trip, but they should focus on matchups with closer teams at their level than travel. I know this matchup was set before the fiscal crisus so I wouldn't blame anyone for this game. My only opinion is that the Salinas program isn't ready for these type games yet. Maybe if they start winning league titles consistently.
