Risk versus rewards

Joining the Army has become a road for three former Monterey County athletes to get a paid education, as well as continuing to play sports — at the Division I level.
Stevenson's Annie Lee left Friday for West Point, N.Y., where she will go through six weeks of boot camp before joining the Black Knights women's soccer team in the fall as a defensive specialist.
Last year Salinas graduate Fabiola Castro joined the Army and became a valuable member of the volleyball team as a freshman outside hitter.
And Pacific Grove product Chris Hardee is vying for playing time this fall as a redshirt sophomore lineman on the Black Knights football team.
The rewards for an eight to nine year commitment is a paid education. The risks could mean a tour of duty on the front line, should the United States still be in a war four years from now.
You have to applaud anyone willing to fight for our country. These athletes are earning their education.
