I realize Bryce Harper is a special talent that baseball hasn't seen since Ken Griffey Jr. A clean player with incredible talent and no ego.
But his decision to give up his junior and senior years at Las Vegas High to make himself eligible for the 2010 Major League Baseball amateur draft next year is mind-boggling.
Scouts have said that had Harper been eligible this year, he could have been the second player selected. Harper is just 16. He can barely drive.
But the 6-foot-3 left-handed swinging catcher can hit, sending one ball 571 feet. Last year he hit .626 with 14 home runs and 55 runs batted in. As a freshman, he hit .590 and drove in 67 runs in 38 games.
The kid is legit. But are we allowing him to be a teenager? You don't get your high school years back. His plan is to go to a JC for one year. If that's the case, I wouldn't mind seeing him at Hartnell or MPC.
