There have been some lean years since the Grizzlies established a girls basketball program more than a decade ago.
Such as a 19-111 record in league play over 12 seasons - six winless campaigns.
While one postseason appearance did occur in 2016, Pajaro Valley has never had a .500 or better record.
Until now.
While there was no inkling of a turnaround after an 1-11 league finish last winter in the old Pacific Division, the program has put itself in uncharted waters.
Having already established a school record for wins at 14 and counting, the Grizzlies will finish with a winning record for the first time.
And thoughts of a league title are dancing in their heads.
Entering tonight's battle with Pacific Collegiate, the Grizzlies are the only undefeated team left in the Santa Lucia Division with six games remaining.
So, how did this abrupt turnaround surface?
Start with guard Jayleen Solarzano, who is among the state leaders in scoring.
The 5-foot-3 senior is averaging 29.9 points a game this year for the Grizzlies, with five games of 30 or more points, not including her school record 42-point effort.
Solarzano is also pulling down 7.4 rebounds and is averaging 6.3 steals. And Wednesday she handed out 11 assists in a win over Gonzales.
Two of Solarzano's better efforts came during non-league play when she produced 34 points in a win over St. Francis of Watsonville and 31 in a loss to Shafter.
The Grizzlies have become the best girls basketball story of the year in the Pacific Coast Athletic League.
