Monterey boys hoops

With seven straight dominating wins to open the season, I think it's fair to start drawing comparisons to the 2016-17 Monterey squad that opened that year with 17 consecutive wins.
 Why?
Well, because four of those starters are now seniors -- older, wiser, more talented and more hungry to achieve team goals.
Falling in the Central Coast Section Division III title game has served as incentive since last March. And for all this unit has achieved, a league title has eluded them.
Monterey has come out with passion and a sense of urgency in beating teams by 24, 48, 41, 37, 31, 39 and 17 points.
Yet, as gifted as the fab four of reigning league MVP Mohammed Adam, Tahjae Ordonio, Mohanid Adam and Evans Charles are, there's help on the bench.
That wasn't the case last year, and it showed up in big games when fatigue became a factor.
Kenny Garrard has been a big boast to the Toreadores along with Suheil Ibrahim. Both can score and both can defend.
Make no mistake, the offense begins with Mohammed Adam, who is dropping in 18 points a game, and along with Ordonio, can knock down 3-point shots at an alarming rate.
But Ibrahim and Garrard can drain jumpers from beyond the arc as well. Charles gives Monterey a presence in the paint while Mohanid Adam might be the most underrated of the fab four.
Monterey has challenged itself, taking part in the Valley Christian Christmas Tournament this week and the St. Francis Holiday Classic.
There's no room for complacency. There is an understanding that what you're achieving today does not provide an invitation in March.
