Greenfield boys basketball

Greenfield (3-21, 1-13)
Six sophomores and a freshman weren't brought up last season to watch. Getting an indoctrination at this level clearly meant growing pains
Expectations had to be tamed for Greenfield. Measuring improvement did not come from wins and losses. It was about building a foundation for the future.
"Our expectation is to improve on the foundation that was laid last season," Greenfield coach Adrian Trujillo said.
That starts with three sophomores and a freshmen that were inserted into the starting lineup last year for the Bruins.
The maturation process has been obvious by the teams 5-0 start to the season.
Offensively Greenfield wasn't bad last season as Angel Villagomez, Oscar Villagomez and Angel Espinoza averaged a combined 28.1 points a game as sophomores.
The Bruins problems were that they couldn't stop opponents, allowing 73 or more points in 10 games -- all losses.
"We will be a more aggressive team this season as we continue to build the program," Trujillo said.
Greenfield showed signs of improvement with its lone league win coming in the final two weeks of the season. One of its losses in the final week was by a point.
While the program has produced just one winning season in its 19 year existence, the feeling is that this group can make a postseason run.
The Bruins three sophomores weren't shy about launching shots from beyond the arc, producing 92 with Angel Villagomez sinking 35 3-point goals.
What could help create more space on the perimeter for the Bruins sharpshooters is the development of 6-foot-2 sophomore Ernesto Martinez.
Brought up last year as a freshman, Martinez gave the team a presence in the paint, while averaging 5.5 points a game.
That intimidation factor is gone for Martinez, who averaged four rebounds a game after his call up in January.
While Greenfield has made just one playoff appearance, that coming in 2012, it's not hiding from the fact that is the objective this season playing in the Santa Lucia Division.
"Taking the program back to the playoffs and competing at the highest level is the goal this year," Trujillo said.
