Gabilan Division girls basketball supreme

Teams in the Gabilan Division did not exactly put the throttle down in their non-league schedules.
 And that's fine.
Soon, the games will have significant meaning when league play rolls around in less than a month.
In the meantime, it's hard to argue with the confidence that's growing among the six programs, all of which believe they're title contenders.
 And they should.
The combined record of the six teams coming into this week is 23-6.
Defending Gabilan Division champion Seaside is 5-0, although it faces WCAL power St. Francis of Mountain View tonight.
So is reigning Pacific Division champ Notre Dame - now a member of the Gabilan.
Remember North Salinas, who won the first five Gabilan Division titles. It's 3-0 .
San Benito is 6-2 and Monte Vista is 3-1, with its lone loss coming from North Coast Section power St. Mary's of Berkeley.
Don't discount Gilroy, whose preseason schedule was the exception in terms of facing potent non-league opponents.
The theory of beefing up your non-league schedule to prepare you for league doesn't always work.
