Gonzales football

Art Berlanga took a calculated risk. The Spartans coach wanted the ball back. Time was running out and his defense hadn't stopped Saratoga all night.
So with the Falcons inside the red zone late in the game, Berlanga told his players to let them score, putting Gonzales down by a point.
Berlanga felt the team with the ball last was going to win. And now the Spartans had four minutes to go down field.
His decision worked -- well sort of.
Gonzales marched down field - as it had the entire game - with its running game and scored to take a 54-49 lead on Payton Flores' 30th rushing touchdown of the season.
Accept it scored with 44 seconds left in the game.
Saratoga had produced points in 12 seconds earlier in the game. This would seem like an eternity, as it drove down to the 23 yard line with three seconds left.
Berlanga was now asking his defense - which had produced a touchdown in the third quarter - to win the game.
And as the Spartans have done all year in a 11-0 season, they responded when Jayson Flores broke up a pass in the end zone as time expired.
It's been 22 years since Gonzales won a playoff game -- 15 since appearing in a playoff game. It may be uncharted waters. But this has been a season of snapping streaks.
The 16-year losing skid to Pacific Grove. The 15-year drought to King City. The nine-year losing streak to Soledad.
 Why stop now.
