Scholarships for distance aces

Nine high school distance runners in Monterey County have been awarded scholarships to continue with their running careers in college by the Monterey Bay Wednesday Night Laundry Runners.

Receiving scholarships were Alisal’s Diego Barajas and Josue Del Real, North County’s Sarah Delgado and Edgar Medina, North Salinas’ Brandon Gutierrez, Palma’s Octavio Rubio, Salinas’ Isabelle Torres, Pacific Grove’s Henry Loh and Marina’s Robert Valencia.

"Over 17 years, our scholarship program has recognized excellence in athletic and academic achievement in order to help our local Monterey County student-athletes ease the financial burden of college,’’ said Mike Dove, founder of the organization and scholarship program.

Previous winners have included former Alisal distance ace Diego Estrada, who was an All-American in cross country at Northern Arizona, and ran in the Summer Olympics six years ago for Mexico.
