The former Carmel slugger shook off a slow start, starting 36 games for the University of Pacific baseball team, hitting .248 this past spring.
The sophomore was second on the team in hit-by-pitches with eight. He hit two homers and drove in 17 runs for the Tigers.
Hayes also scored 15 runs and posted a .370 on base percentage, stealing four bases in four attempts.
Defensively the third baseman sported a .908 fielding percentage.Hayes was a four-year starter at Carmel, playing in the infield and pitching, earning a spot on The Herald’s All-County baseball team twice.
