Best moments of the prep season

1. Laurel Wong of Santa Catalina became a state champion in the pole vault in track and field, the first in the county in 18 years.

2. Salinas avenged an earlier season loss in football by beating Milpitas in the Central Coast Section Division I finals.

3. An historic season meant hanging a new banner in the gym for Alisal, who went out and won the State Northern California Division II boys soccer title.

4. Matt Martinez of Alvarez make his third trip to the state meet in wrestling a charm, finishing fifth overall at 182 pounds.

5. Santa Catalina opened the volleyball season by equaling last year's record breaking start with 27 straight wins, reaching the State Northern California Division III semifinals.

6. Soledad ran off a record 17 straight wins to capture the Mission Trail Athletic League baseball title, reaching the Central Coast Section Division II finals for the first time.

7. Palma's Joey Burlison and Carmel's George McNeely both reached the state golf championships for the second time in their careers.

8. Maybe the game of the year in any sport when Salinas' Kasey Cannon hit a basket at the buzzer to stun Gabilan Division boys basketball champion Alisal 50-49 in the CCS Division I quarterfinals.
