San Benito won a share of the Gabilan Division softball title -- again. Yet, it got seeded No. 15 in the CCS Division I bracket, behind top seed Gilroy and No. 5 Salinas.
Why am I confused?
Well, the Balers beat Salinas twice by a combined score of 26-8 in Gabilan Division play, and split their season series with Gilroy, coasting to an 11-2 win in their last outing.
"Because of the parity in the Gabilan, we all gave each other losses and didn't get as many points," Notre Dame coach Tom Cardinale said. "We're going to see how it all works out."
The Spirits have won four of the last five CCS Division II titles. Yet, a mediocre league record has them seeded No. 11 in Division II and on the road at San Lorenzo Valley on Wednesday.
Some reward for the host team, who only has one more overall win than Notre Dame, a program that has won 16 divisional titles in the last 20 years.
Essentially teams got penalized for playing in a stronger league or taking part in more competitive tournaments.
San Benito went 2-3 in a tournament in Las Vegas and was winless in the Clovis Tournament, while Notre Dame was just 1-1 in the Nor Cal Tournament in Tracy.
Apparently not everyone on the baseball side was pleased with the seeding as a representative for the WCAL objected to Soledad being the No. 1 seed in Division II.
His reason is he believed St. Francis and Mitty were better teams because he felt that the WCAL is a better league and the two teams deserved to be seeded No. 1 and No. 2.
He might be right.
But the committee voted against his proposal, which was the right move. No hard feelings if you are the Aztecs. Just extra incentive.

Yeah, when I saw the seedings in Softball I was shocked too, then I had sarcastic laugh after sarcastic laugh I probably sounded like a jerk. LOL Good thing I was alone.
John, Every point you hit on were also my thoughts almost exactly, as I went through team after team match-up after match-up.
For instance, The SCCAL League Champion Aptos Mariners who swept the season series vs Runner Up SLV received The #12 seed while 2nd place SLV is the #6 seed. Both are in D1.Yes 12-1 League Champ Aptos is #12 seed and 2nd place SLV #6 seed. What?
You also mentioned how San Benito ended up with a #15 seed, Yes the Co-Champion of one of the Toughest Divisions in Nor Cal, San Benito a 15 Seed Behind 3rd place finisher Gilroy the #1 Seed in CCS D1 & also behind 4th place finisher #10 Christopher. Unbelievable.
Yeah, I'm calling it, this will be the First #15 seed to win a CCS D1 Title.
Now let's get on with the games and umm... The 3-4 First round "Upsets" well, based on the 2018 CCS Rankings anyway.
Now, Play Ball!
