Today's finale between King City and host Carmel potentially has bigger ramifications than just second place.
Because the Mustangs still have to finish a tie game with Mission Trail Athletic League champion Soledad on Friday, there's a flickering of hope of gathering a share of that title.
If Soledad, who has won 12 straight games, were to stumble today at Pacific Grove, and King City beats Carmel, finishing that tie game would be for a share of that title.
The Mustangs and Soledad will resume their game from March 9 in King City tied at two. Darkness halted play.
Ironically, the Aztecs and King City shared a league title in 2010.
If Soledad beats Pacific Grove today, finishing that game could still decide who finishes in second or third in the MTAL.
Either way, Soledad, King City and Carmel are all headed to the postseason, with Soledad likely to be placed in Division II and King City and Carmel in Division III.
Soledad is one of the hottest teams in the section right now at 20-4. Its last loss came on April 4, a 1-0 setback at Monterey.
During its 12 game winning streak, the Aztecs are averaging 14.1 runs a game, having beaten Pacific Grove 20-1 on Tuesday.
