Wednesday's games
No. 13 King City (19-7) at No. 4 Gilroy (16-9), 4 p.m.
Gilroy did an about-face, going from three Gabilan Division wins in 2017 to 11 this spring to return to the postseason.
Seven of those league wins came in the final month of the season when Gilroy went 7-2 down the stretch to finish in second behind San Benito.
King City has a little momentum going into its third consecutive postseason appearance, having gone 7-1 to rack up 19 wins. It was one of two teams to beat Soledad in the MTAL.
Part of its surge can be attributed to the return of Tommy Stephens, who suffered a torn MCL during the first week of the football season, but was cleared for baseball about four weeks ago.
Stephens bolsters a lineup that already includes Clay Barbree, Jeovani Santoyo, Cedrick Perez and Jose Arreola.
King City has no shortage of arms, starting with Barbree, Brian Lopez and John Serrano.
Who ever gets the start, it has to find a way to keep Jaycob Tellez and Alex Benavides off the bases. The pair have been lethal all season for Gilroy.
The last time the two teams nicknamed the 'Mustangs' faced each other was in 2016 when Gilroy posted a 9-5 non-league win.
