Here is the problem with the Central Coast Section's Open Division format for football.
No one else in the CIF has it.
So when you throw the eight best teams based on points into the Open Division, you're keeping seven of them from any chance at a state appearance in their respective divisions.
Only a section winner can get extended a state invitation.
Palma is a perfect example.
It's considered a Division III state team based on enrollment. But if it ends up in the Open Division this year -- and I suspect it will -- the lowest it could drop is into Division I.
I think there are to many Division I teams in Northern California ranked ahead of Palma at this point. But December is a long way off.

Fortunately, whoever wins the CCS Open Division is almost asured to get into this years new playin game for state Bowl Open or D1. CCS Open winner could get a bid to play in against DLS which is almost assured of that spot again this year with what they have coming back.
CCS Open Divivon playoff should be changed and realigned by enrollment or some other option (but it should be elimiated). OIt hurts the CCS D2 and D3 size schools that get bumped into the Open Division, but it seems the leaders and many of the public schools want to keep the WCAL schools and Palma in that division and will be tough to change their minds. They took out the opt up clause this year due to many of the WCAL teams wanting to compete at their level so they improve ability to get into bowl without having to go through the Open divivion guantlet.
