Locals released

It has not been a good week for former prep stars looking to land a spot on an NFL roster.
San Francisco cut tight end and one-time Seaside standout Tony Curtis on Friday. And Green Bay released second year center-guard Evan Smith, who prepped at Salinas High.
Smith had a solid preseason with the Packers and seemed destined to be their backup center. It's possible he could be signed to their practice squad if no one claims him off waivers.
Because of his past relationship with Bill Parcells when Curtis was in Dallas, Miami may have some interest in the 6-foot-6, 250-pounder, who has three career touchdown receptions.
What is puzzling is why has no team picked up former Gilroy product Jeff Garcia? Yeah, he is 40. But there are not 32 backup quarterbacks in the NFL that are better than Garcia.
Garcia is currently playing in the United Football League for Omaha. One of his teammates is one-time Ohio State tailback Maurice Clarett, who hasn't played in a game since 2002.
