MTAL girls heating up

So we have a four-team battle for supremacy going on in the Mission Trail Athletic League in girls basketball.
I can't say I'm surprised that King City ended Stevenson's run of 27 straight league wins, since the streak started after a loss to the Mustangs in 2007.
What has been a pleasant surprise has been the rise of Gonzales, who like King City, Stevenson and Santa Catalina, all sit at 4-1. For Gonzales, that's two more wins than it had all of last year.
Anyone remember the last time the Spartans challenged for a league title in basketball? No? That's because it has never happened.
Granted, Gonzales still has meetings with Stevenson and Santa Catalina. Because of its fast start, it likely won't be able to sneak up on the two MTAL powers.
But confidence has a way of elevating a team effort. I still like Santa Catalina to win the league title. King City is so tough to beat at home. No one on the peninsula wants to make that drive.
We've got a battle.
