A bullet doesn't discriminate.
As we learned from the recent shooting of Monterey junior linebacker Joey Christensen, it can happen anywhere, including your own home.
Sure, Christensen used error in judgement in hosting a party while his parents were out of town. What he did not plan on was having uninvited guests show up, looking for trouble.
Being shot twice wasn't on the agenda. Either was battling for his life. He's 16.
I'm not sure there is a lesson here either. Do we lock our kids up at night? You can't live in fear. But as we learned, you don't have to be hanging with the wrong crowd to have trouble find you.

John,
I want to thank you for your fair article on what happened to my boys. People do need to understand they both made a huge mistake by having the party in the first place, but it doesn't warrant being shot and possibly killed because you're trying to clear out your house. They put away breakables and mom's wine and blocked off rooms that shouldn't be entered. They told neighbors we were having a birthday party. This was 2 teenagers (by the way Joey's brother, Daniel is actually older) ages 16 and 17 who tried to be as smart as possible while they were being incredibly dumb. Kids need to understand these things can and do happen even when they think they are being in control. But you're right, what do you do? This was the first time my husband and I have ever let them stay home unattended. I called repeatedly to check on them and warn them not to do what they did. They were being mischiveous teenagers but other than that they tried to do everything else right. How could this have happened? What do we do? If anyone out there (Paul Miller - Pine Cone)thinks for one minute I don't thank god everyday that it was my kids an no others were harmed they are wrong. If they don't think that one of the first emotions I had was guilt, extreme guilt. They are wrong. No place for guilt or blame only learning and a new insight on how precious each and every day is with our loved ones.
Thank You Again,
Tammy Christensen
