Saturday's game
Yuba (0-0) vs. Hartnell (0-0) at Rabobank, 6 p.m.
These rivals have had dramatic endings in each of the last two regular season meetings, with Jeff Weimer catching a touchdown pass with 22 seconds left in last year's win for the Panthers.
The 49ers did gain a measure of redemption 12 weeks later against Hartnell by capturing the Living Breath Foundation Bowl.
For the third straight year, Hartnell has a roster of under 50 players. That wasn't used as a handicap last season in posting an 8-2 regular season, appearing in its sixth bowl game in eight years.
Weimer and his 78 catches and 1,000 plus receiving yards are back for Hartnell, along with record setting quarterback Isaiah Randelle, who led the state in passing yards per game.
Yuba will have its eye on Weimer, who caught 11 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns in last year's season opener. Freshman Angel Olivas provides another target for Randelle.
A concern for the Panthers is the offensive line, which had only four healthy players practicing last week. It's conceivable defensive lineman Pablo Villasenor could see action on both sides of the ball.
Establishing a ground game is a priority for Hartnell. Chewing up the clock enables the defense to be more rested. Emmanuel Ortega rushed over 3,000 yards in three years at Soledad.
The defense is stabilized with the return of DeMarcus Hawkins, who recorded 10 sacks last year and had a 55-yard fumble return for a touchdown against Yuba in the season opener.
An effective pass rush is critical. In last year's regular season meeting, three of Yuba's four scores came through the air.
The secondary should be at strength for Hartnell with the return of Trey Smith and Jakob Streeter. Linebacker Drew Schuler is a run stopper in the middle of that front seven.
