Saturday's game
Pacific Grove (0-1) at Gonzales (0-1), 7:30 p.m.
The ground game was such a big part of the Spartans surge to a league title and a school record 11-0 start last year.
The lack of a running game last week is part of the reason Gonzales has as many losses this year as it had all of last year.
Reestablishing the running game is a priority for the Spartans, who for the first time in 21 games - or head coach Art Berlanga's first game - did not rush for 100 yards in a game.
Last year Gonzales set the tone for its season, ending a 15-year losing streak to Pacific Grove with a 34-23 win, rushing for 308 yards.
The Breakers, who were beaten 33-14 by Carmel last week, will look to carve up a defense, relying on running backs Blake Moore, Anthony DaSilva and Chianti Carter.
Effective in grinding the ball on its opening drive last week for a touchdown, Pacific Grove has to be better on special teams, as it was victimized by an on-side kick last week.
While the Spartans want to run the ball, Pacific Grove struggled in defending the shorter passes last week, giving up over 200 yards through the air.
Gonzales quarterback Jose DeLeon threw for 238 yards, with Frankie Cisneros catching nine passes for 138 yards and a touchdown.
